golf.filipinas®

Product Series: Golf Club Head-Covers

Custom Hand-Knitted in Baguio, Philippines

This whole project started with a golfer whose love of the game and its traditions opened up his mind to the gentility and integrity the game represented. But all golfers are individuals in their own right - be it their golf swings, mental attitude on the course, handicap indexes, and decorum and equipment preferences. This particular golfer however favored the nostalgic part of the game. In his desire to soften the garish look of today’s game, he wanted to bring back that “nostalgic gentility” of the game that speaks of integrity and taste.

This golfer hopes there are like-minded individuals out there who long for this “nostalgic gentility” in the product offerings of golf.filipinas®.

About Baguio City
:

The City of Baguio (Ilokano: Ciudad ti Baguio; Filipino: Lungsod ng Baguio) is a highly urbanized city in northern Luzon in the Philippines. Baguio City was established by the Americans in 1900 at the site of an Ibaloi village known as Kafagway. Baguio City was designated by the Philippine Commission as the Summer Capital of the Philippines on June 1, 1903 and incorporated as a city by the Philippine Assembly on September 1, 1909. The name of the city is derived from the word bagiw in Ibaloi, the indigenous language of the Benguet Region, meaning 'moss'. The city is at an altitude of approximately 1500 meters (5100 ft) in a moist tropical pine forest conducive to the growth of mossy plants and orchids.

Baguio is also home to one of the country's most profitable Philippine Economic Zone Authority areas. Firms located in the PEZA areas mostly produce and export knitted clothing, transistors, and small components for vehicles, electronics and other computer parts. (Wikipedia.org)

About Knitting:

Knitting is a method by which thread or yarn may be turned into cloth. Knitting consists of loops called stitches pulled through each other. The active stitches are held on a needle until another loop can be passed through them.

Knitting may be done by hand or by machine. By hand, there are numerous styles and methods. Flat knitting, which is done on two straight needles, produces a length of cloth, while circular knitting, which is done on circular or double-pointed needles, produces a seamless tube.

Different yarns and knitting needles may be used to achieve different end products, by giving the final piece different color, texture, weight, or integrity.

One of the earliest known examples of knitting was finely decorated cotton socks found in Egypt in the end of the first millennium AD. The first knitting trade guild was started in Paris in 1527. With the invention of the knitting machine, however, knitting "by hand" became a useful but non-essential craft. Similar to quilting, spinning, and needlepoint, knitting became a social activity.

Hand-knitting has gone into and out of fashion many times in the last two centuries, and at the turn of the 21st century it is enjoying a revival. According to the industry group Craft Yarn Council of America, the number of women knitters in the United States age 25–35 increased 150% in the two years between 2002 and 2004. While some may say knitting has never really gone away, this latest reincarnation is less about the make do and mend of the 1940’s and 50’s and more about making a statement about individuality as well as developing an innate sense of community. Additionally, many contemporary knitters have an interest in blogging about their knitting, patterns, and techniques. (Wikipedia.org)
